the fury that is life

AHHHHHH!!! i've wanted to post in sooo long yet i have no time! even now this post is going to be but a short list of the stuff i want to properly write about but have no time to bang out on my computer. in the future i'd like to/will be posting about:

- randomly seeing a dead body (okay, it was under a blanket and it wasn't so random given my environment, but it was still jarring to my senses);

- a story about my grandfather, and why i want to record some of my family history on here;

- a discussion of my life's plan for the next couple of years (gulp)

i also want to get back to writing about my daily observances of all things strange, quirky, boring, sedate, whatever; i feel like this blog has lost its direction (well, if it had any in the first place) and i'd like to steer it back on track. ooo, and can i just say i'm headed back to london in a little over a week's time, and that i'm slightly excited at saying hello to coffee shop hottie again? let's hope he's still working there!

over and out for now,

beautiful things

EXAMS ARE DONE, WOOHOO! and that's all i'm going to say about that. :o)

i came across this blog where the author chronicles three beautiful things that happen in her life each day. i have a week to bring you up to date on, and i can't keep it to just three, but i will pinch the format for today's post:

Beautiful Things In the Past Week:

1. sitting on the side of the bathtub with nunuk at 3am after a night of dancing after my last exam; we were soaking our aching, dance-worn feet while munching on fried chicken and chips.

2. chatting with coffee shop hottie and finding out he was born in the year of the monkey (making him 27).

3. having the time to wander around my favourite haunts (coffee shop, spitalfields, brick lane) without a care in the world.

4. going to bluewater with some friends and buying a sexy, very scandalous top.

5. finally starting philip pullman's "the amber spyglass" and being totally engrossed in it, so much so that i got in trouble at the pharmacy by my boss (but i didn't care). I LOVE IOREK.

6. celebrating the year of the rat with family, friends, parades, fireworks and GOOD FOOD.

7. a beautiful weekend of weather here in londontown.

8. youngin' telling me in his indirect, boyish but sincere way that he doesn't want to see me leave england. it made me smile.

number 8 happened at the school bar on friday; i was working and he showed up, buying me G&Ts (a job where you can drink on the job!) and chatting with me for a few hours before heading out with his mates for a boys' night on the town. he asked me what my plans were after graduation (i still have over a year left); i told him most likely i'll be going home to canada, though i have had thoughts lately about qualifying here in england first. he then proceeds to tell me that england needs more people like me, that i'm unique (although he used the word "obscure" i think, hahaha) and that he'll be sad to see me go. he then leaned over the bar and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek before dashing off.

before you get any negative thoughts in your head don't worry, nothing happened or will happen; i just think we share a mutual fondness for each other and that was his way of telling me he'll miss me. his speech reminds me of the scene from "bridget jones' diary" where bridget makes an ass of herself in front of everyone at the darcy's anniversary party when it's announced that mark darcy is moving to new york; she gives a speech about england losing its "top person" and "legal brain" and when youngin' gave his little schpiel to me, that scene came to mind.

i got this off of youtube (of course); it's a little long and i think it downloads a bit slow, but the scene's somewhere in the middle and it still cracks me up:

a desk instead of a ball

exam time is here and CET is deep in revision, that is when she's not checking e-mails every two seconds, checking facebook every two seconds, browsing her itunes every two seconds, going to the kitchen for a snack every two seconds, and generally procrastinating every two seconds, she is getting her work done. :o)

still actually quite bummed out about youngin'...the same questions that will never be answered keep swimming in my head; i think about what he's up to, whether he thinks about me and if so what he thinks...i want him to think about me and regret not taking a chance with me. i want him to miss me. and i wonder what's worse - not seeing him these next couple of weeks but thinking about him, or seeing him everyday at school and thinking about him - i just want him out of my head already. if i could just remove that part of my hypothalamus in charge of emotions from my brain, place it in a box on my desk, keep it there for the duration of exams and then place it back into my brain afterwards, i'd be fine. that's what i need, a hypothalamic lobotamy.

i left the flat for a walk yesterday afternoon, after not leaving for three days in a row (yes people, i am literally chained to my desk); i had to get out to remind myself what fresh air smelled like (in london it smells pretty much like pollution) and to stretch my muscles before they atrophied. i walked to the nearby village and came across a pile of tulips on sale...i ended up buying tulips in the same colours as the ones i bought last year, when living in whitechapel with vij. deep purple, bright fuschia and pale pink.

oh, and i popped by the coffee shop on wednesday and chatted briefly with coffee shop hottie; still as cute as ever and still with the same brown eyes that i could happily swim in. i daydreamed today that he came into the bar where i work and promptly chatted me up!

i miss vij. i miss my american classmate too (she's finishing her degree in the states). i miss having another fun, brilliant, slightly crazy single girl to hash the gossip with, to hit the town with and paint it red. anyone know where i can meet one?

right, back to studying.

life and school - happy co-existence or no?

ten days since my last post and there's lots to tell!

school is KICKING MY ASS. the pace and workload are relentless! i keep up with the coursework which is fine, but all the extra notes you're suppose to take/keep up with outside of class, all the readings, holy shit, there is just so much to do! in first and second year you could kind of get away with not doing too much until exam time (as evidenced by my frequent trips to the coffee shop, spitalfields market, kinetica, brick lane, etc.) but not this year - if you don't start now you are seriously screwed. i sometimes wonder if my brain has the holding capacity for all this information? seriously!

last wednesday i was in the studio audience during a taping of the GRAHAM NORTON SHOW!!! for those who don't know who he is, click on this link. he was sooo funny and the whole experience was great; best part was the fact that i was pretty close to the front, so everytime the camera was pointed to the audience you could see me! ha ha ha, my few milliseconds of fame. gabriel byrne was a guest and he was pretty cool, though it took him forever to tell one story, even if they were good. they cut out a lot of what he said just for that fact alone. and the second best part - the musical act on were THE BACKSTREET BOYS! hahahahahahaha - they were so bad, i was laughing throughout their entire performance. and yes, they really are that short in real life. oh, and for my friends in canada, i taped the show so if you want to see me on it i'll bring it back to toronto over christmas. :o)

i've gotten a second job that i started last week - i am officially a bar wench! yes that's right, CET got a job at her university bar. last friday was training day and i must say i'm liking it very much; it's a great way to meet people and there is something slightly cool about being a bartender. tomorrow's my first shift on my own - wish me luck! oh, that reminds me, i need to e-mail prof b and personally invite him down for a drink. :o)

the last couple of times i've been to the coffee shop i haven't seen the hottie; instead, i have discovered another POTENTIAL coffee shop hottie, all in the same shop! it started when i walked in one day wearing one of my t-shirts from threadless; this one is entitled "diabolical hot dog":

how awesome is that t-shirt? anyhoo, potential CSH looked up and immediately commented on it. today i wore another threadless t-shirt, this time it was "rock how to":

and again i caught him looking my way, checking out my tee, though this time he didn't say anything. we looked at each other a few times, smiled at each other a bit and i thought to myself "hmmm, he is quite cute." the only thing is that i am NOT going to ask him out, NO WAY IN HELL - how would that look if i systematically went through all the male workers at that coffee shop, asking each one out in turn? BAD, BAD, BAD. so all i'm saying is that there's something else to keep me occupied when i'm there, besides drinking my tea...

ooo, and a little bit more boy gossip: londoner has returned (well, sort of). so i haven't heard from him since the end of june/beginning of july. on the advice of a friend, i texted him when i got back to london letting him know i was back in town. nada. nothing. so yes, of course i get the hint - i got the hint even before the summer was over. anyhoo, what bugged me about the whole thing was that this was the same person who was so "open and honest", who confided in me about personal things that you just don't tell people you've just met; someone who waxed poetic about life, philosophy, true love, blah, blah, blah...he seemed so sincere, so for it to end like this...if anything, i was upset at the lack of respect he showed me by not contacting me, even if it's just to let me know that he's no longer interested or that he's met someone else. french canadian had the good sense to let me know he was dating someone new when i got back from DC last year, so why not londoner? i don't expect much from anyone except they be up front and honest with me - apparently that's a tall order.

okay, so a couple of evenings ago i e-mailed him, letting him know what i thought. it wasn't a bitchy e-mail or anything like that, it was simple and to the point, and if anything, writing that e-mail was more for me than for him, as at least i got to say what i wanted to say and be done with it. i sent it to him not expecting a reply (would i really expect an e-mail at this point? ha!) and lo and behold, less than 48 hours after sending it off i get a reply. what the fuck? as soon as i call you out on your shit you contact me? in his reply he basically said he procrastinated in contacting me back; that he really is open and honest but that he is also very weak. he also told me that he met someone new over the summer but that he still really likes me, so if i can forgive him then perhaps we can be friends "somewhat". right.

i'm pretty certain i will not be replying to that. what's the point? what semblance of a friendship would we have? i frankly do not want to be friends with someone who does shit like that. friends of mine have said "oh, but he had the best of intentions" - bollocks i say. i want someone who does what he says and says what he does, plain and simple. i want someone to like me so much that he will ACTUALLY call when he wants to call, and WANTS to hang out with me and makes it so! are these basic wants so far-fetched and unattainable? seriously!

thoughts, people, opinions? what say you?

almost forgot!

walked into the coffee shop on friday afternoon and to my utter delight, saw the beautiful mocha eyes of my lovely coffee shop hottie. he asked me how my summer in canada was and i asked about his; we spoke a bit about the miserable summer weather-wise that england experienced, and that's about it.

may not seem like much of an exchange and perhaps it wasn't, but it made me smile.

mmm, he's a part of my routine, my life here in londontown and i'm happy to resume it again.

the view from my window

this is the view from my window now:

compared to last year:

what a difference, eh? i'm obviously living in a part of london now that is a little quieter, more suburban than the hustle and bustle of east london. i do miss the organized chaos and the grittiness (not to mention being within walking distance to spitalfields, brick lane, and my favourite coffee shop), but i am starting to appreciate the space, the green and the trees, as well as breathing in (relatively) cleaner air when i step outside on my way to school, compared to the sludge they call air in the central part of the city.

coffee shop: i went last friday with my evil hypnotist and coffee shop hottie wasn't there. two new people were there instead. hmmm. this was the first time i stepped in since i've been back here so i'm not panicking just yet; i plan to pop by tomorrow so we shall see if i'm lucky enough to run into him...

it's so funny because tonight classmate T and her fiance A and i were talking about potential suitors for me amongst their friends. i honestly don't know what i want at the moment, or whether i'm even actively looking; perhaps it's a lull brought on by lack of action in that department, or indifference, i don't know, but i feel like my life's too full at the moment with other things to concentrate on finding a mate. perhaps that's a cop out, i don't know, but it just doesn't feel like one of my priorities at the moment. maybe i just haven't been "swept up" by anyone yet.

the karmic door swings wide

you know that saying, "when one door closes another door opens?" well, that's what happened to me last week.

it was a thursday when i asked coffee shop hottie out and he said no; two days later on saturday night, i found myself at a bar on brick lane with vij and a friend of hers who was visiting from canada, and wanted a taste of the london nightlife. vij and i had never been to this bar before but have passed by it enough times to know that it was a pretty hip and happening place, so we decided to check it out that evening.

the dj was spinning some really wicked tracks, mostly funk and jazz from the 70's. vij and i were cuttin' a rug on the dance floor, right by the dj booth, when a rather tall man with a funky afro (think tamed-down version of sideshow bob) reached behind me to get his drink, which he had left on the dj table. i moved out of his way and after he had left vij commented that he was "totally checking me out."

now, CET is always COMPLETELY oblivious to the attention of others; i was just happily dancing away and didn't really notice the men in the room. anyhoo, so i spot the guy a distance away (he had left the dance floor) and although i can't see his face clearly, i know he is looking at me and i am looking at him. when vij and i walked off the dance floor to get a drink, he brushed my arm and we started talking. being a bar/club it was quite loud, so he suggested we move to the corridor to chat.

hmmm, what shall be his blog name? well after the canadian guys (first, french-canadian and third), office boy and scottish guy, i suppose i can call this one "the londoner", as he was born and raised here. not too original i know but tough!

so, we're in the corridor and the chatting is easy; for some reason i felt completely at ease with him and if there's something to be said for intuition, mine told me that he wasn't slimey and was in fact quite genuine. don't worry though, my guard was still up a little (i'm not THAT naive). he asked for my number and then he asked for a kiss (which i thought was nice); THANK GOODNESS he was a great kisser! if i had another bad kiss after scottish guy i think i would have slapped him. he had to leave as it was his friend's birthday and they were bar-hopping; he said he'd call me the next day.

sure enough, on sunday he rang. we chatted briefly before he asked me for a date; we arranged to meet that wednesday. monday night on my way home from work he texts me; he's in my neighbourhood meeting clients and would like to know if i'm free for a quick drink. so we meet for a drink on the monday, followed by our first proper date on the wednesday, then he came over to cook me dinner while i studied this past saturday. three dates in one week! and i should be studying for exams!

i don't think i want to get into all the details because for once (in a long time) i genuinely like this guy and feel quite a connection with him. he's open and honest like me - tactless too which i find funny - cerebral, affectionate and sweet. he's also quite a hopeless romantic which draws my ire at times because i am not, but i like the fact that we're such opposites in so many ways. he knows i'm leaving london for the summer in about three weeks' time, and he knows i have to buckle down and study, but even a girl needs a break from her books every now and then, and he'll be there ready with a kiss and smile and dinner!

CET :o)

p.s. absolutely NO comments about how he's "the one" or crap like that, as i do not believe in "the one" and have actually been planning a post on the subject for quite some time; stuff like that just makes me want to puke. thanks!

can't fault me for trying

so folks, the story ends here:

i asked coffee shop hottie out today and guess what? he has a girlfriend.

bummer.

it's a rainy afternoon here in londontown (why do people always start stories with a comment on the weather?); after a stressful morning dealing with idiots in my drug delivery lab, i went to the coffee shop to have a cup of tea and unwind. now, i already knew i'd pop by the coffee shop today, and if the opportunity arose i would ask coffee shop hottie out; due to having dinner with evil hypnotist and friends last night, who egged me on and provided advice on how to ask a guy out, i was buoyed with courage and confidence and dammit, CET was on a mission. i dressed up a bit nicer than normal and even put on makeup - yes, makeup! - as today would be the day!

i didn't bring an umbrella today (figures) so by the time i got to the coffee shop, CET was a little less cute-looking than normal. well, just a bit damp around the edges. it was busy when i arrived and so at first i just said hello and ordered my pot of tea. i found an empty corner and proceeded to read my book and sit tight, waiting for my moment. sure enough within twenty minutes the coffee shop became all but deserted; coffee shop hottie was downstairs putting away some recently-arrived stock and i thought to myself "okay, this is IT! go downstairs and ask him out!"

CET got up from her seat.

CET sat down.

CET got up again and took a step away from her seat.

CET sat back down.

CET thought "okay, you're being an idiot," and got up again.

CET sat back down.

my heart was racing a mile a minute and my throat felt constricted; where had all my built-up courage gone? i thought "oh fuck it, CET JUST DO IT ALREADY!" and got up from my seat and opened the door to the basement before my courage dissipated. the washroom was downstairs as well, so it wasn't out of place for me to be going down the very narrow steps; coffee shop hottie had put away the produce and was at the bottom of the stairs about to head up. we each said hello and he waited at the bottom of the steps for me to clear them before he made his way up:

CET: "hi...um...this might seem a bit weird, but would you like to go out for dinner sometime?"

i'm pretty sure that was the last thing coffee shop hottie was expecting to come from my mouth. the second the last word left my lips though, i knew his answer would be no; his face said it all. it was a spontaneous mixture of shock, happiness, flattery and sadness all at the same time.

at first he couldn't find the words, but then he said "i'd love to but...i have a girlfriend."

CET: "dammit!" (and then a giggle of nervousness and relief)

CSH: "i'm sorry!"

CET: "that's okay, i'm glad i at least tried. what can i say? you're cute."

CSH (blushing): "aw thanks. it was very brave of you to ask though, and i do enjoy seeing you at the coffee shop."

CET: "thanks. see you upstairs," at which point i made a beeline for the bathroom.

sigh.

in the bathroom i let out a burst of laughter, mostly because i couldn't believe i had done it! it was mixed with relief too, because now i have my answer and i don't have to pine or speculate anymore. i can go to the coffee shop now and say hi and make idle chit chat, knowing where i stand and knowing that i tried.

i must say though that it would've been nice to gaze into his deep, brown eyes up close and personal, rather than through the steam of a cup of tea...

hello, my name is...

I FINALLY GOT COFFEE SHOP HOTTIE'S NAME!!! WOOHOO!

i'm so giddy i'm buzzing. how silly of me.

so since i stopped blogging about him (until now of course), i have been going to the coffee shop as per usual, and little by little, in my own time, i have gotten to know him a bit better. our conversations get a little bit lengthier each time i see him; he's really laidback, and has an offbeat sense of humour that throws me for a loop at times, as i don't know whether he's joking or being serious, and some of the things that come out of his mouth can be so random.

today was the first time i'd seen him since before easter. he asked me about my trip home so i told him the usual: it was great to see family and friends, it snowed a little, yes, canada's that cold, even in april; an example of his randomness occurred when he suddenly asked me "what type of souvenirs does canada have?" huh? i said "which ones are you interested in, cheesy ones or cool ones?" of course he says "the cheesy ones", so i tell him we sell miniature statues of the CN Tower, as well as t-shirts with moose on them. then he asked if moose are really that big (?); i said that while i've never seen a moose in person before, i have seen them on tv and yes, they are quite large creatures. hmmm...

he then tells me about his trip to wales and i cleverly-yet-oh-so-casually asked who he went with (well, i'm sure it wasn't that clever and it probably came across that i so obviously wanted to know if he had a girlfriend but whatever!); he said he went with a bunch of his friends. then finally, OH YES FINALLY, i asked him "sorry, but i don't think i've ever gotten your name" and then he told me! he asked for mine and i told him, having to spell it out for him because NO ONE ever gets it the first time i tell them; he then proceeds to tease me about it, calling me a name that i haven't heard since elementary school.

when i sat down to eat my lunch he sat at a table near me, as it was his breaktime. i was reading the paper and didn't want to disturb him as he was reading his, otherwise i would've liked to continue the conversation. he left around the same time i left the coffee shop; i saw he headed across to spitalfields and i was walking that way myself. he was quite ahead of me when i suddenly thought "should i catch up to him and ask him out?"

like with scottish guy (though i didn't hide behind any white vans), i called a friend for moral support; this time it was vij. i hummed and hawed with her over whether i should do it, though of course she said yes; by the time i got off the phone however, i didn't know where he had went to. oh well, next time!

whew, i'm just glad i know his name now, the monkey on my back was starting to weigh me down. now for the next step of asking him out - hopefully it won't take me as long to do it!

my day off

here's the richard serra sculpture near liverpool street station, just a half hour walk from my flat.

yes i did go to the coffee shop and yes i had a brief verbal exchange with CSH and one of his co-workers actually (in which i might've slightly flirted), but no i will not say anything until i have indeed gotten his name and/or have asked him out!

wandered around spitalfields afterwards (as per usual) and visited my favourite gallery at the moment, kinetica. viewed their latest exhibition and absolutely loved it - this really is art from and for the 21st century. check out the link for more on their "luminaries and visionaries" show.

had dinner tonight at classmate T&A's place; T cooked yummy yummy chinese food and my belly was happy happy for it.

today was exactly what my soul needed.

the world is alright again

coffee shop hottie is BACK!

i was having lunch with canuckian and classmate T at the coffee shop and had just bitten into my smoked ham sandwich when the door opens and in he walks, looking as fine as always. i was so shocked (and in mid-bite) that i didn't know what to do; canuckian, being my twin, knew something was up and instantly realized that CSH was in the vicinity, judging by my expression - she looked around and spotted him instantly. what does she do then? he comes over with a plate of food for classmate T and BOOM, she starts talking to him! asks him to take a picture of us as that's what tourists do, take pictures. i was so stunned all i could do was smile for the camera. man, i really have to work on getting his name now, as canuckian and business woman have each individually managed to speak more words to him in five minutes than i have in over a year.

i'm happy though because he's back. exhale...

a pint for you and a pint for me...

i'm done exams, woohoo! all in all i think they went well.

busy busy though right after; had lunch at my coffee shop (hottie still wasn't there, i'm getting worried...), a quick wander around spitalfields again and then home to meet evil hypnotist. had a good chat in my room while i was packing for dublin. JUST managed to get to the airport before the check-in desk closed (tip: when travelling to airports around london, ALWAYS give yourself more time than you think you need because trust me, you'll need every second) and then boom, on the plane and an hour later in dublin to meet tan.

slept in today until 1:30pm, it was so sweet. haven't done that in goodness knows how long. didn't do much today, in the car mostly with tan and her man driving around the city. had a yummy portobello mushroom burger at the porterhouse, a brewery as well as a chain of bars. checking e-mail now before heading out drinking with tan and some friends later on tonight. went for a drink last night from the airport too; the irish are serious about their drinking!

scottish guy update: not much to update other than we didn't end up meeting up on tuesday as he was busy and i really needed to study. he wants to see me when i'm back from my travels so i guess we'll see what happens then!

not too bad i think...

wrote the first exam this morning...went pretty well i think! save for a few muck-ups here and there i answered pretty much everything in full. hand was cramping up a few times, there's that much writing to be done, but i feel good about it!

headed to my coffee shop afterwards for a long, relaxing lunch. a cause for alarm (somewhat): coffee shop hottie wasn't working today, and i noticed they had put up a "help wanted" sign - i hope this doesn't mean he's left??? will have to go back a few more times to see if this is indeed the case...

wandered around spitalfields for a bit before walking home. i wish i could describe to you what living in east london feels like; books like "brick lane" by monica ali, "salaam brick lane" by tarquin hall, or "the east end" by alan palmer try to invoke the sights, sounds and smells of the community but i say you just have to come here and experience it for yourself! it's chaotic, gritty, lively and real and i love it.

new beginnings...

HAPPY NEW YEAR DEAR READERS!

after a christmas hiatus from my blog i am back! i hope everyone had a lovely holiday/christmas/hanukkah/kwanzaa/etc. and a fantastic new year!

the end of another year always brings about a bit of personal reflection; looking back on 2006, i can say that it was a very good year. i finished my first year of pharmacy school, worked a summer job that allowed me to meet wonderful people, and it even provided a bit of excitement in the romance department, albeit short-lived :o). one of my best friends got married and another six (six!) couples i know got engaged; i continued with my dragonboat racing and have made many more happy memories. second year of pharmacy school started and i couldn't be happier living where i'm living in london and with who i'm living with; i truly feel blessed!

emotionally, 2006 was much better than 2005. my heart was slighty bruised by office boy, but nothing that couldn't be mended; i continued to drool into my coffee over coffee shop hottie - he has indeed provided me with much fun and fodder for my blog :o) - and i leaped outside my comfort zone by giving a random boy my number! oh, and we mustn't forget forging new limits with french canadian :o).

anyhoo, here's to a fresh new year and clean slate of 365 days to fill with LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST!

nothing ventured nothing gained

i was also thinking of titling this post "i have balls."

so i went to the coffee shop just now, primed and ready to ask coffee shop hottie his name. yes, i am leaving the country tomorrow and yes, i have left it until the last possible moment but still, i have been a very busy girl this week so have not had time to go until today.

as per usual on a sunday afternoon the coffee shop was packed, filled with christmas shoppers taking a break from wandering around spitalfields across the street. the queue to order was tremendously long (and for a tiny coffee shop that's saying a lot!); i quickly scanned behind the counter and much to my dismay, coffee shop hottie was not there! doh, thwarted! don't worry however dear readers, CET did one better...

so this guy standing in front of me turns around and asks if i could hold his place in line while he gives his bag to his friend who's sitting outside at one of the tables. i say "sure, of course," and when he gets back we start chatting. he's a cute scottish guy from inverness with dark brown hair and blue eyes; we talk about scotland, canada, living in london, what i'm studying, etc., all the while getting closer to the front of the queue. he gives his order and is suddenly off with his two cappuccinos and slice of carrot cake, wishing me a happy holiday before disappearing. i order my wild mushroom soup and find an uninhabited corner to eat.

while eating i start thinking about going up to him after i'm done and giving him my number. i even take out a random scrap of paper from my purse, write my name and number down and put it back, at the ready for when i approach. obviously during this time my mind switches back and forth between fear of rejection and building enough courage to do something i've never done before - give a complete stranger my telephone number. just to prolong the internal debate i order a cup of tea and stew for a little while longer, hoping the courage will come soon and come fast.

i finally get up from the table and make my way outside; he's sitting with his friend a little distance from me. i start walking over, my heart going a mile a minute, when suddenly fear grips me and i veer across the street to spitalfields, stopping behind a white van! i quickly call kiwigirl for support and advice, as my biggest obstacle (besides my fear) is the fact that his friend is a GIRL, and so therefore might be his girlfriend! how would it look, giving him my number in front of his possible beloved?

kiwigirl says "nothing ventured, nothing gained" and i don't even know this guy and may never see him again, so i have nothing to lose. we debated the whole friend/girlfriend situation and well, it's not like i know for sure she's his girlfriend, so i might as well try!

i hang up and stand behind the van for a minute, trying to build up the courage once more. i set off back across the street and approach him from behind, taping him on the arm. i don't know what i said because i was so nervous and it probably came out all in a jumble but i think it was something along these lines:

"hi we spoke in the coffee shop i hope this isn't too forward of me but here's my name and number i'm leaving the country tomorrow but will be back in january so give me a call sometime if you want i hope this isn't too forward of me take care happy holidays bye."

then i practically flew down the street, so nervous and delirious and giddy i was! i think he looked kind of shocked and i did look at his friend/girlfriend for a moment and i hope my eyes told her "i'm sorry if this is your boyfriend and i'm trying to pick him up in front of you - i hope you'll forgive me but if he's not your boyfriend can you blame me for trying?" he did smile and wished me a happy holiday again, and that's all i saw and heard before turning around and running away.

so i didn't get coffee shop hottie's name (project for the new year) but i GAVE MY NUMBER TO A COMPLETE STRANGER! i think that more than makes up for it.

yellow tail and jerry

after yet another incident (which i can't get into here), vij and i cracked open our bottle of yellow tail shiraz (courtesy of marvin the martian - thanks!) and drank it all, while watching "jerry maguire" on tv. jerry's arrogance and personality kind of reminded me of office boy, so i was cursing at the tv in between big gulps of red wine :o) at the end of the movie though jerry finally realizes what a doofus he is and comes around - i couldn't help but sigh and wish that was office boy and that renee zellweger's character, dorothy, was me. and can i just say how ridiculously cute that little boy is in the movie?

went to the coffee shop today and a slight turn of events - no i didn't get his name but another guy that works there - that i've seen before but not often - spoke to me! he's american and, noticing my canadian accent, asked which part of canada i was from as i was getting up to leave. there was some slight confusion for some reason as he thought i was from the west coast, with a seattle/vancouver-type accent (which i've never gotten before); i should've made more small talk with him but he caught me a bit off-guard. as for CSH, i've graduated from just "hi" to "hi, how are you?" today!

wandered around spitalfields for a bit and am now at an internet cafe/photocopying/faxing/international calls/buffet indian restaurant place - yes, i am confused as well and yes, this place actually exists - off for home soon to get cracking on some much-neglected homework.

lattes and drunken teddy bears

friday: hung out with T&A and their oh-so-drunken yet oh-so-fun friend, olivier. drunks can be stupid/violent/annoying, but olivier was very entertaining! his eyes couldn't focus, his speech completely incoherent but boy, did we have a good time. at one point he thought my name was lindsay and that i was from the province of quebec - in china. sounds stupid i know but i suppose you had to be there. he was so easy to take the piss out of and did i ever!

saturday: watched the lord mayor's show and the subsequent fireworks - really enjoyed it. there was this sweet little float celebrating the providers of seafood to london's markets; kids and adults were dressed up as fish, lobster and octopus and one particular little boy in a shiny, pink fish costume had everyone in stitches, as he wanted to wave to the crowd but couldn't, seeing as how his arms were packed into his tubular fish costume. so cute.

stayed in and watched an indian film with vij on saturday night, "woh lamhe" starring kangana ranaut and shiney ahuja. it's a love story between a top actress and an aspiring filmmaker. very good dramatic film and i really enjoyed the actors' performances; the only time i laughed out loud was when during one particularly dramatic scene in which the couple embrace, the male lead suddenly breaks into song. too funny.

sunday: spent the afternoon wandering around spitalfields with gabby and then going to the coffee shop to check out the hottie - gabby had never seen him before. gabby's verdict? "you weren't kidding when you said those eyes should be illegal!" amen sista.

another light week for me class-wise; will try to be studious however and get some studying done. i do want to take time though to check out this latest installation in the turbine hall of the tate modern - you get to slide through the tubes, how awesome! weeeeeeeeee!!!

hmmm...

i'm at the library where i should be studying and yet, surprise surprise, i'm e-mailing, chatting and blogging on the internet. why do i even bother to kid myself?

so...i've realized lately that i like someone a lot more than i thought i did...i don't like this fact at all, because i'm pretty sure it's not reciprocal. needless to say i'm a wee bummed out about it. i mean really though, what was i expecting, another long distance relationship? HELL no, not if i can help it! actually, i wasn't expecting anything at all, only now i feel like i do want something more. what? i don't know. more? yes. all very cryptic i know, but that's how i've been feeling as of late.

i think i need to make a trip to the coffee house, perhaps at the end of this week, to get my mind off this...

had lunch today with an old co-worker and got caught up on all the gossip. i had a chocolate bread and butter pudding with vanilla cream that was YUH-UH-UMM-MMY, oh yes...am definitely going back for some more at some point!

going to capoeira class tonight - have missed the last two due to business woman's visit - am looking forward to it very much as have desparately missed the exercise. my ankle is STILL slightly wonky from the fall during halloween weekend so must take it easy today. there's a big afro-dance/capoeira workshop going on this saturday that i might partake in, though the lord mayor's show is on the same day and time as well.

have recently discovered the wonders of facebook - good god i didn't know how popular it is! - is anyone else on it? i'm not so addicted to it yet but i know people who are. all this wall-to-wall messaging and photo-tagging, another highly-effective time-waster...

baby steps...

business woman and i went to the coffee shop this morning for brekkie...coffee shop hottie wasn't working when we first ordered and sat down, but near the end of our meal he walked in, saw me and said hi! good sign: he recognizes me. conclusion: small victory won.

most of the feedback i've gotten from everyone has been "just ask him out!" i suppose i'm going to have to, as i'm sure you don't want to read about me going on and on about his gorgeous mocha eyes for the next few years - you'd probably want to slap me - heck, i'd want to slap myself!

so i will try to muster up the courage to a) strike up some semblance of a conversation with him which will b) lead to more conversations which will c) lead to me asking him out!

did you know:

- i live in an area of london that once had the highest population of women, almost all of which worked as prostitutes?
- i live in prime jack the ripper territory!

business woman and i did the "jack the ripper" walk last night, it was very good. our guide was excellent at describing the murders (most gruesome!), the characters involved and the history of the time. the houses in our area that once were "doss houses" to thousands of people who had no place to live now sell for millions of pounds. in these doss houses you'd pay about sixpence to sleep on a mattress on the floor, fourpence to share the mattress with someone, and twopence to sleep on a washing line! seriously, you literally hung your head and arms over a line strung across two posts and slept standing up! in the morning to kick you out the landlord would cut the washing line. and in the one square mile that was the city of london at that time, three million people lived! craziness.

my fancy gives a lecture

so the handsome prof b. gave a lecture to my class today...it's so funny because quite a few people now know i find him highly attractive, so throughout class i was subjected to many sly looks, giggles and snickers...i don't mind though, as it spices up my day! speaking of which...

vij proposed that in my last year of school, right before i leave england, i give coffee shop hottie a note to let him know that over the last 4 years, i have enjoyed coming to the coffee shop in large part due to him. would this be creepy or cute? please keep in mind:

a) i don't expect anything from him - i just want him to know i appreciate him (and his yummy mocha eyes of course)
b) point a) is proven by the fact that i would be about to leave town when the note would be given
c) wouldn't it brighten up your day immensely to know that you've had such a positive effect on someone?
d) doing this would let him know how i feel without sabotaging my coffee shop visiting rights

what do you think? i still have another 2.5 or so years to mull this idea over.
